To obtain a California C39 License for roofing contractors, follow these steps:

  3. Low-Slope Roof Projects (17%)

    • Rectifying low-slope roof systems
  4. Steep-Slope Roof Projects (26%)
    • Setting up flashings, ventilation, and underlayment
    • Employing various steep-slope roof systems

    • Ensuring personnel safety

    • Implementing fall protection measures

Test Site Regulations: The examination is closed-book; no reference materials are allowed. Any materials brought to the test site must be placed in an unmonitored area at the candidate’s own risk.

Test Approach: The exam consists of multiple-choice questions, with four options per question. Each question aims to identify the single best answer. Some questions may involve mathematical computations, and a calculator will be provided.

Guessing is not penalized. It’s advisable to attempt all questions rather than leaving any unanswered.

Ample time is provided to address all examination questions. Therefore, it’s essential to thoroughly read each question and its options before selecting the most appropriate answer.

Please ensure that you carefully read and adhere to the instructions provided with the application. Follow these steps:

 

  1. Fill out the Application for Original Contractor’s License.
  2. If required to take the examination, apply for only one license classification at a time. After receiving your original license, you may apply for additional classifications.
  3. Utilize the Certification of Work Experience form 13A-11 to report and validate journey-level work experience. Additional experience verification will not be accepted after the application is submitted.
  4. For experience gained through owner builder work, submit the Project List form 13A-64 for each completed construction project, in addition to the Certificate of Work Experience.
  5. Complete all forms, including the application, and accompanying documents using ink or a typewriter. Forms completed in pencil will be returned.
  6. Ensure the application is dated and signed by all listed personnel.
  7. Thoroughly review your application for any omissions. Any missing information will result in a delay in processing your license.
  8. Submit the application, along with the $450 application processing fee, and all required documents to:

    Contractors State License Board
    P.O. Box 26000 Sacramento, CA 95826-0026

    Make sure to include your return address on the envelope.

  9. Do not include any bonds or the initial license fee with your application. Upon successful completion of your examination, you will receive instructions on how to submit the required documents and initial license fee.
